Black Diamond has issued a voluntary recall for one of its avalanche beacon models, the company announced Thursday, November 21, 2024.
The PIEPS Pro IPS is being recalled due to issues with the size of the battery compartment. The company will fix the issue and return it to customers within seven business days, the release said.
The recall affects any Pro IPS transceivers made and sold between October 1, 2023 and November 22, 2024. Products affected will have a serial number with the first four digits ranging from 2326 and 2445. You can find the serial number on the inside label of the battery compartment door.
“The PIEPS Pro IPS avalanche transceiver may not turn on, or if it does, may inadvertently turn off if it is impacted or jarred,” Black Diamond says. “This is due to a loss of contact in the battery compartment if used with AAA batteries at the lower end of allowable dimensions. If this were to occur before or during an avalanche, the device may fail to function correctly or turn off, making it more difficult or impossible to locate a victim and potentially resulting in serious injury or death.”
Owners should stop using the beacon immediately.
There has been a single report from a consumer, Black Diamond said, and no one was injured as a result. Follow this link to learn more about the recall.
In March of 2023, Black Diamond also recalled the Recon LT Avalanche Transceiver, due to a problem that led the transceiver to enter search mode while the switch remained in the send position. That issue was resolved by updating the device’s firmware.
