It’s pretty normal to see urban snowboarding in places like Ogden, Utah or Ottawa, Ontario, but Kansas City? That’s so rare, local TV news station KCTV got involved

Sam Anderson and the Sinister Films crew hopped in the car and headed to the land of Patrick Mahomes and tomato-based barbecue to battle some rails and jump off of roofs after Kansas City was the recipient of 10” of snow on Monday. The Arctic blast was promising to the street crew from the Midwest.

After getting all that snow, it wouldn’t be uncommon for it to melt away in a day or two, but an Arctic blast ensures that the snow sticks around thanks to the cold temperatures. The crew plans to spend about 10 days total in the city.

“Normally the snow comes, and it melts really quickly,” Anderson told KCTV reporter Jiani Navarro. “So having his artic blast come through after all this snow, is kind of our dream.”

Navarro’s live shot opens with her standing in front of a no parking sign, and a nondescript building. Then, viewers notice a snowboarder set to drop in off of the roof of that building.

“When people think of snowboarding you probably picture mountain peaks or ski resorts, but for a group of pro snowboarders that came to Kansas City, they’re doing their tricks, in unique places,” she says. “Before these pros can strap into their board and catch air, there’s a lot of engineering that goes into getting it right.”

It’s a classic local broadcast package, with plenty of jumpy b-roll to establish the setting. There’s a shot of Anderson and the crew shoveling snow, and a few more of riders ratcheting their bindings and setting up ladders. The crew definitely got some clips, which later leads to Anderson explaining what a boardslide is to the general public.

The crew even got their most recent film project PICKPOCKET linked to in the station’s digital story. You can watch that film below.

Sinister Films dropped PICKPOCKET on Torment Magazine's YouTube channel in late November. The project was beloved in the snowboarding world, and Anderson told Snowboarder that he received a lot of love from some of his idols shortly after the film was released. Plenty of clips from Anderson, Colton Carroll, Conor Carroll, and Bobby Stitt circulated on social media immediately after its release. Not long after, he got an invite to X Games Street Style Pro at Copper Mountain.
