One of the biggest obstacles to growing as a snowboarder is the barrier of entry. It costs a lot to fall down and be cold all day. Wintersports, while amazing, aren't known for being easy to get into.
Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe is doing something to change that. The ski area will host a free introductory snowboard experiences for children between the ages of 7 and 12 this weekend on Saturday, January 11, 2025.
The session will be held from 9 a.m. to noon

“This event is the perfect opportunity for kids interested in snowboarding to learn the basics and have some fun in the snow,” marketing director Mike Pierce told the Tahoe Daily Tribune. “While it’s not an official snowboard ‘lesson,’ there will be multiple stations set up that are designed to provide an intro to the basic skills of snowboarding. The best part is – there’s no cost, and no equipment is needed. Kids just need to show up to participate.”
Participants should join near the Main Lodge on the west side of the Show-Off trail. Those who want to turn the opportunity into a weekend long experience don’t have to worry about the Sunday Scaries. Lake Tahoe unified School District has already announced a tentative school closure day on Monday.
Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe had one of the earliest opening days in the country this year, on November 8. It beat out Northstar, Heavenly, Kirkwood, and Palisades for the earliest opening day in the Lake Tahoe region. It started making snow on October 19. The resort went into “full tilt” mode after it started getting even just a few inches of natural snowfall in the mountains. It was a welcome sight, since the winter sports season was threatened by a bout of wildfires that hit the region hard over the summer.
Mt. Rose has gotten between 102" and 133" of natural snowfall so far this season. The base is sitting at 36" to 50" throughout the mountain.
Every chairlift except for the Chuter quad is open as of January 9, 2025. The mountain also has opened every single trail so far this year, both on the Main Side and Slide Bowl.
