A chairlift at Attitash Mountain Resort fell off of a ski lift, and sent its rider to the hospital on Sunday, February 2, 2025.

The chairlift at the Bartlett, New Hampshire ski area fell around noon. The New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Passenger Tramway Safety Board announced that a joint investigation is underway after the accident.

An adult man was riding a chair on the Flying Bear lift when it fell 20 feet. The man was conscious and walking after the fall, the Fire Marshal’s office said in a press release, and was brought to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears a mechanical failure caused one of the chairs to dislodge from the cable. The manufacturer of the lift has been contacted and is responding to the scene to assist with the investigation,” the release from the fire marshal’s office said. “No other injuries were reported. All other passengers that were on the lift at the time of the incident were unloaded normally at the top of the lift.”

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is encouraged to contact the New Hampshire State Fire Marshal’s Office at (603) 223-4289 or fmo@dos.nh.gov.

“We can confirm an incident occurred on our Flying Bear chairlift today,” Attitash General Manager Brandon Swartz said in a statement Sunday from Vail Resorts. “The safety of our guests is our top priority, and we are investigating the incident.”

The Flying Bear lift was built in 1995, the Boston Globe reported. Vail Resorts purchased Attitash, Mount Sunapee, Okemo Mountain Resort, and Stowe Mountain Resort together in 2017.

“We do daily lift inspections ahead of operations and the NH Passenger Tramway Safety Board inspects our lifts annually,” the statement said.

Attitash and its sister mountain Wildcat are on Vail’s Epic Pass. They’re both located about 150 miles from Boston. In total, there are eight lifts and 76 trails. As of the morning of February 3, 2025, there were six lifts and 59 trails open. That’s good for 77% of the ski area’s terrain.
