Despite some strong snowmaking weather in West Virginia as of late, Snowshoe Mountain has decided to push back its targeted opening day, the ski area announced on its Instagram page Friday morning.
The original opening day was scheduled for November 27, 2024.
“We’ll continue to work on building our base over the next few days and closely monitor the weather next week,” the post said. “There is still optimism for some holiday weekend skiing here at the ‘Shoe, but it is too early to make a decision at this point.”
Some marginal temperatures and high levels of humidity are making snowmaking a little more difficult than usual this time of year, but the team is firing the snowguns anyway to get its base down for the season. This is undoubtedly a bit of a bummer for locals, as they awoke to a snowstorm and 33 mile-per-hour winds.
Those who already had reservations in place for the opening week should be hearing from the resort’s operations team directly in the next few days.
Hopefully things will be ready to go in early December. Snowshoe is one of 15 Alterra resorts that kids under the age of 12 can snowboard for free at from December 7 through December 13.
There are two sides of the resort: Snowshoe and Silver Creek. There are 61 trails, 13 lifts and four terrain parks between the two of them. The resort sits at almost a mile high of elevation, amidst the Cheat Mountain Range. That leads to its own climate, and offers snowfall that is much more similar to that of the northeastern United States.
Snowshoe ended its 2023-24 season with an impromptu snowstorm. While it was very welcome – many of the trails were looking like mountain biking season was already well underway by just a day before the storm – it also left some room for some core shots.
