It’s New York’s turn.
Opening day announcements from ski areas across the northeast have been pouring in slowly but surely. Whiteface Mountain, New York is the latest to join the party.
The resort 13 miles from Lake Placid will hold a season passholders-only day on Friday, November 15, 2024. The general public will have access to the mountain over the weekend.
“Terrain will be limited to intermediate and experts only and downloading via the Face Lift will be required,” an Instagram post says. “Get the whole low down on our snow report on our website and check back here later today for more information.”
The Face Lift and Summit Quad will spin at 10 a.m. Friday. Riva Ridge, Paron’s Run, Excelsior, Ilmar’s Alley, Lower Northway, and Summit Express are all expected to be open. For Saturday and Sunday, lifts will start spinning at 9 a.m. Adult lift tickets are $65, teenager and senior tickets are $55, and junior tickets will cost $45. Frequent skier cardholders are not granted a discount this weekend.
Whiteface will be closing again after Sunday to allow snowmakers time to prepare for the rest of the season. The mountain is home to the greatest vertical drop east of the Rocky Mountain range (3,430 feet), and has 94 trails across three peaks and 25 miles.
Whiteface joins Vermont’s Killington and Maine’s Sunday River on the brief list of open ski areas in the northeast. It’s been a fickle fall so far, with temperatures climbing into the 70s far later than has been the norm.
That seems to have changed for the immediate future at Whiteface. Friday and Saturday will have a low of 14 degrees, while the high will be around 36. Sunday will be a touch warmer, with a high of 39. And while there’s rain in the forecast for Monday, there’s a 60% chance of snow on Thursday.
